With dark winter days just around the corner, I thought it would be appropriate to shed some light on a happy niche. This month we’re going to focus on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and the solutions available for it. This is a very hot niche with tons of opportunities to help people and make some money.

Step 1: Niche Research

Our first task is to open up Google and have a look at what is within the search engine result pages for some terms related to SAD. Let’s have a look at the term dawn simulator light. Here is a screenshot of the SERP result. Click on the image to see the full screenshot. Dawn Simulator Light Search The SERP shows us that there is potential because we see a great deal of ads within the result. This means there are other people who are paying for this keyword to show their ad. The downside is that this term shows lots of authority sites such as Wikipedia and Medical organizations about dawn simulator lights. These would be difficult to outrank. But having a look at the bottom Searches related to dawn simulator light, I see the term dawn simulator light therapy which sounds interesting. Dawn Simulator Related Searches So let’s go and research light therapy. While typing in light therapy, Google’s suggest feature showed me a keyword that looks promising. Light therapy lamps. Light Therapy Lamps This sounds much better than light therapy lights as it is redundant. So, thanks to Google suggest, we’re going to look at this term. Click on the screenshot to see the full image. Light Therapy Lamps Whoa! Look at all of those ads! That is a good thing as it shows us there is purchase potential. When you see images on the right side of the SERPs (Shop on Google), this is awesome because it tells us even Google see potential for the niche. We have our niche folks! Light Therapy Lamps is the one. Our next step is to perform some keyword research.

Step 2: Keyword Research

Keyword research determines how often a certain keyword is searched in a given month and how difficult it would be to rank that keyword in the search engines. There are a ton of keyword research tools available to do this, some are free and some are paid tools. My personal keyword research tool of choice is Jaaxy which you can learn more about here. It really is an awesome research tool for niches and keywords which you will see in a moment. Upon logging into my Jaaxy account, I enter the keyword light therapy lamps and here is what I get. Light Therapy Lamps In Jaaxy let’s break down what each column means.
  • Keyword: the keyword researched
  • Avg: the average number of searches that the keyword receives per month
  • Traffic: visits to your website if you achieve 1st page rankings
  • QSR: quoted search results – the number of competing pages ranked in Google
  • KQI: keyword quality indicator – green is great, yellow is OK, red is poor
  • SEO: a score based on traffic and competition – higher is better
  • Domains: availability of domains related to the keyword
  • Related: additional keywords that are related to your target keyword
Light Therapy Jaaxy Result Our initial search shows us that the term light therapy lamps is a good keyword to go after. There is a little bit of competition (hence the yellow KQI), but with effort – it could rank. The other positive thing I see is that the .org domain is available. So, we could buy LightTherapyLamps.org and use that as our base domain name to get started. Looking at all the other keywords that Jaaxy provided (30 in total), we could do quite well with this niche as most of those other keywords have green KQI’s. I added up all the search Avg. for the green KQI’s and it was 6,075 searches a month. That is a HUGE potential of traffic to our website!

Step 3: Build the Website

Our next step is to buy the domain and build the website. The domain name purchase is pretty easy, you can either click on the domain extension inside Jaaxy which takes you to GoDaddy or simply go to GoDaddy yourself and buy the domain name. Now with the domain name purchased, it’s time to set up hosting and build the website. This can end up being a time consuming process if you go down the route of signing up for shared hosting and installing WordPress. But since I am a member of Wealthy Affiliate, I get free hosting for unlimited domains and SiteRubix which is a super fast way of installing WordPress. So I am going to set up my website this way since it will save me a ton of time AND money. Setting up a website using Wealthy Affiliate’s hosting (& SiteRubix) is a simple 3 step process. First thing I need to do is add my domain name. So, I enter LightTherapyLamps.org into the add your domain name area. Setting Up The Domain Name My next step is add the website’s title which will be our initial keyword that we research earlier. I can change this at a later time if I want, but for now I will use Light Therapy Lamps. Website Title Name My final step is selecting a pre-made theme for my WordPress website. There are over 1500 to choose from, but I have created a Favs list and will select one from there. Choosing My Wordpress Theme OK, I am ready for my website to be built. So I click the build website button and wait a few seconds. Click To Build The Website And within 10 seconds, my LightTherapyLamps.org website is ready! I can go ahead and start writing my content for the site and that is it. No messing around with plugins or any fancy pants tools because everything I need is all ready to go. The Website Is Ready To Go

Conclusion

Going forward with this niche idea walkthrough, I am going to continue to research additional keywords and make a saved list inside Jaaxy so I have a database of content ideas for the site. From there, I will start writing content based on my research and start doing reviews of specific light therapy lamps as these reviews will funnel people into buyers via Amazon. So that is your niche idea walkthrough for the month, I hope you find this article educational and if you would like to go to McGeheeSchool.com, simply go to the Get Started page and go through the EXACT process I just showed you. 1. Thank you, that was very well explained and a good reminder of the process to follow to choose a niche and develop a site around it.
Keep it up! We can never know too much.

  2. Hi Jay,

Thank you for the masterpiece:) I’m here to get some ideas of how to choose a niche yet ending up learning a little bit about light therapy as well. Double bonus:)… Love your ways of how to narrow down the niche.

  3. Awesome example!

I got to this point a few times before in some niches, but I’ve never been able to see any real rankings. Looking forward to part 2.

  4. I like how you used the Google Instant function to narrow down the niche and then Jaaxy to verify that there were good keywords associated with it.
I’m looking forward to seeing what you recommend in this niche. Western NY is one of the cloudiest places in the US. We don’t see a lot of sun and SAD is a really big issue here. Even in the Summertime.
I’m wondering if they help with vitamin D deficiency as well.
