Making money in your spare time selling things like vitamins and supplements might sound easy. There are plenty of companies out there where you can sell a variety of products and earn commissions for those sales. What you probably don’t take into consideration is how much upfront work and money it can sometimes take before you start making commissions. Youngevity is a multi-level marketing company that have a variety of vitamin, supplements, drinks and other products that are sold through distributors. In this Youngevity MLM review, I’ll take a look at the products to see if you can make some money here.
What is Youngevity MLM?
Youngevity was founded in 1997 by Dr. Joel Wallach. This multi-level marketing company is mainly known for their health and wellness products such as vitamin and mineral supplements. Their headquarters are in Chula Vista, California. They are a publicly traded penny stock.
Dr. Joel Wallach is most notably known for his research on the health benefits of selenium and other types of trace minerals. He spent 40 years studying animal health in veterinary medicine.
The focus of this company is on 90 essential nutrients in the form of supplements that every body needs and that the body cannot produce on its own.
Are Youngevity’s Products worth Their Price?
Youngevity has a wide range of products that include health related products and supplements, beauty and personal care, sports drinks, home garden products, pet products, and more. Their flagship product is the Plant Derived Minerals which is a white liquid you mix with water. This particular product does not seem to have a nice taste but customers still like the benefits it provides.
As you can see from the image above, the retail price for the Youngevity Plant Derived Minerals concentrate is only slightly higher at Amazon. You can’t actually buy the product from Amazon. When you order this product from Amazon, you are most likely buying it from a reseller who’s a distributor.
The Youngevity MLM Opportunity
As a distributor for Youngevity you are a member of their Independent Associate program. There are a few different ways to get started as a distributor. You can start working on your business in your spare time with a minimal membership or you can jump in with both feet and buy a CEO Mega Pak that will cost you $499. The success of your business will depend on how much time you put into signing up customers for monthly auto shipments and building your team by recruiting others to join you. Your income is based on sales for which you will receive commissions.
How Much Does it Cost to Join Youngevity?
As a distributor, in order to get your own products for free, you have to get three people to buy one of the Health Packs in a month. This will entitle you to get your own Health Pack for free the following month. The different membership options are listed below:
Anyone who simply wants to buy products will pay retail prices and all shipping charges. This option is free.
By paying the membership fee of $19.95 you will be entitled to 20% discount on all products. In order to take advantage of free shipping, you will need to set up monthly auto shipments. Auto ship orders need to be for a minimum of $99 in order to qualify.
To become a distributor of Youngevity products, you have to pay an annual membership fee of $49.95. This allows you to also get your products at wholesale prices, qualify for free products and earn commissions.
CEO Combo Mega Pak
If you are truly serious about building a business as a distributor, you can opt for the CEO Combo Mega Pak which will cost your $499. The kit includes a welcome kit and a number of sample products that you can give to potential customers to try out. You can also buy other types of mega paks depending on what area of healthy you want to focus your business on.
Can You Make Money with Youngevity?
Like most MLMs, the amount of money you can make will solely depend on how much time you put into getting more customers and recruitment. Youngevity make a point of ensuring that there’s no guaranteed income for distributors. If you can continue to grow your team, and increase your customer base who are also enrolled in monthly auto shipments, you can earn commissions from your sales and the sales of your team members.
You can also earn points on each dollar you spend and when you promote Youngevity products to others. It doesn’t matter what level you choose. You are automatically enrolled once you are a Youngevity customer.
The amount of points you earn will depend on the type of customer you are. The points can only be redeemed for discounts on products.
Before beginning the use of these supplements, you and your customers will take the online health evaluation. This is a free evaluation designed to screen four areas of your health–hard tissue, soft tissue, digestion and blood sugar. Once completed and submitted, the customer will receive a link to schedule a free telephone consultation. By taking the health evaluation you are helping your customers determine what types of supplements they need.
In the telephone consultation, you will discuss the results of your health evaluation and the options available to you which are the different membership options. If you opt for the Preferred Customer and pay the wholesale membership fee, you can also get your own personal health coach. Other topics of discussion will also include the possibility of you becoming a distributor.
Variety of Products
There are over 1,000 products to choose from here and there is a large variety of different types of products as well. The type of supplements you need will be determined by your health evaluation and your telephone consultation which are designed to make sure you pick the right products for your particular situation.
Monthly Auto Shipments
The monthly auto shipments means that your customers don’t have to continually reorder the same products each month when they run out. This system allows your business to run almost on auto pilot as long as the auto shipments continue. You will earn commissions on the monthly auto shipments to your customers.
No FDA Approval
Dr. Wallach’s Selenium research has been recognized by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to be a necessary mineral. As a result, content has been added to dietary supplements containing Selenium that reads, “may reduce the risk of certain cancers.” But the products themselves do not carry FDA approval.
Push the Auto Shipments
Before you can start receiving commission checks, you’ll need to convince your customers to sign up for monthly auto shipments. Those auto shipments also need to be for a minimum of $50 in order for you to receive a 5% commission. That works out to only $2.50 for every $50 order. And that does not include shipping.
Sign Up Friends
In order to start making money with Youngevity, you’ll have to sign up four friends to be distributors as well as purchase products yourself.
The BBB (Better Business Bureau) has received several complaints about Youngevity. The complaints are vary from problems with auto shipments, product returns, poor customer service, restock fees, money-back guarantee problems, and customer disappointment with the products. All the complaints have been answered by Youngevity but not all customers were satisfied with the answers they received.
Is Youngevity Worth Joining?
Youngevity has a wide variety of products that may be easy for you to sell to friends and family. I didn’t find any mention anywhere about getting people to host a demo party in order to sell products. That can be both a good thing and a bad thing. Finding individual customers may be harder to do without the hosting party requirement. The main takeaway here is that you don’t make any money until you can make sales. And commissions only start with customers that set up monthly auto shipments.
As for recruiting a team, you’ll have to be able to show your own success before anyone may be willing to join you. That will take some time so you probably won’t be making decent money for a while. And when you first get started, you’ll only be making around 5% commissions on $50 sales. That’s not a lot so I say, it’s probably not worth joining.
Working for an MLM is a really tough gig. There’s usually upfront costs and lots of your own personal time invested. At the end of all that, you haven’t even earned any money yet. If you manage to build a team, you’ll earn more money but you will still have to maintain your own customers. It is strictly commission based. If the people in your team don’t make any money they will quit and there goes your additional income streams. It’s a lot of eggs to put in one basket for a questionable return.
